Matisyahu

Matisyahu is an American hassidic (Lubavitch) Jewish Reggae artist. He was not brought up an observant/orthodox Jew but took it upon himself, as an adult, to become more involved with Judaism. After dropping out of high school, he spent some time camping out in Colorado, in Israel, following Phish on tour, and eventually going to a wilderness school in Oregon, where he first started developing his musical pursuits. His music combines the sounds of Bob Marley and Shlomo Carlebach (Orthodox Rabbi and music artist). He sings mostly in english, with some hebrew and yiddish sprinkled in and his lyrics are spiritual, powerful and uplifting.
