dump und restore sind die traditionellen Unix-Programme zum Sichern und Wiederherstellen von Dateien auf Partitionsbasis. dump kann Dateisysteme auf Blockebene (also am eigentlichen Dateisystem vorbei) lesen und so zum Beispiel recht effizient inkrementelle Sicherheitskopien machen.
Spätestens seit Kernel 2.4 funktioniert dump offiziell nicht mehr. Linus Torvalds hat dump sogar in einem Beitrag auf der Kernel-Mailingliste als dummes Programm bezeichnet. Machen sie einen weiten Bogen darum.
