    Activate 1024x768 console

How to change the default Linux console screen resolution to 1024x768 (non-X)[edit]

    • open /boot/grub/menu.lst with your favorite text editor.
    • move down to the lines starting with "kernel" like:

    kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.22-3-amd64 root=/dev/md1 ro single

    • according to your original line, just append vga=791 without quotes
    • example: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.22-3-amd64 root=/dev/md1 ro single vga=791
    • save the file and quit your editor. reboot.

this is tested on various flavors of Debian. unfortunately it doesn't work on CentOS/RHEL.
