This holiday was started in honor of Douglas Adams, the late author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. The books stated that every hitchhiker should know where his towel was, and the towel became a symbol of the work. After Adams died in 2001, May 25 was declared Towel Day.
